We are incredibly proud to share that two remarkable young people connected to the Children’s Respite Trust have been named finalists in this year’s Child of Sussex Awards.
Alfie has been shortlisted for Achiever of the Year, in recognition of the phenomenal progress he’s made at our Little Stars Nursery. Diagnosed with autism at the age of two, Alfie initially faced significant challenges with communication, social interaction and accessing mainstream early years settings. Since joining Little Stars 18 months ago, his determination and hard work have shone through. With support from our specialist team and his own resilience, Alfie has learned to communicate using both spoken words and communication tools. He’s widened his play, formed meaningful relationships, and continues to thrive in his development. His story is one of true perseverance and we couldn’t be prouder.
Harry is a finalist for the prestigious Gold Award, which celebrates extraordinary children whose stories go beyond traditional categories. As a young carer to his twin sister Emily, who has complex needs, Harry navigates life with compassion, strength, and a maturity well beyond his years. From the moment he joined our siblings group, Harry stood out as someone who uplifts everyone around him. He’s always ready to help, support, and encourage others. Whether volunteering at events, helping around the centre, or speaking in front of 400 guests at our Masquerade Ball, Harry gives back in every way he can. His dream is to become a firefighter which we think is a perfect fit for someone already making a lasting impact. We’re absolutely delighted that Harry is being recognised in this way.
These nominations are a heartfelt celebration of two incredible young people, and we feel privileged to be part of their journeys. The Child of Sussex Awards will take place on Friday 27th June, and we wish both Harry and Alfie the very best of luck on the night!
